Eyelid Surgery FAQ

How long does eyelid surgery take to perform?

Dr. Moran performs upper eyelid surgery on an outpatient basis. The surgical procedure takes about an hour. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home from surgery.

What is the best age to have blepharoplasty?

There is no ideal age to have a blepharoplasty. Some patients benefit from eyelid surgery at an early age. Others may not need it until later in life. Having it at an earlier age does not necessarily mean that you will need to have it again when you are older. For lower lid bags, it is best not to wait until they are severe since they are much more difficult to treat at advanced stages.

Are male blepharoplasties different from those performed on women?

Male facial anatomy differs from women in many ways, however, the procedure is essentially the same. Dr. Moran artistically considers all of the facial features so as not to create an altered appearance while still addressing the patient's concerns such as droopy eyelids or puffiness.

Is eyelid surgery painful?

Patients are generally very comfortable during the procedure. Cool compresses and analgesic pain control are usually sufficient for any postoperative discomfort. A small amount of narcotic pain medication can be taken as needed but is rarely necessary.

Will health insurance cover my blepharoplasty?

In most cases, health insurance does not cover blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) when it is performed solely for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Moran is not contracted with any insurance providers and does not accept insurance reimbursement for her services.

Are You a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The best blepharoplasty candidates in Nashville and other areas are men and women who:

  • Have healthy facial tissue and muscles
  • Abstinent from smoking and in good general health
  • Aren’t diagnosed with serious eye conditions
  • Have specific and realistic goals for how they’d like to improve their appearance

Eyelid Surgery Scarring: What to Expect

Blepharoplasty involves strategic incisions along natural creases or below eyelashes to minimize scarring visibility. Though some scarring is inevitable, it typically fades discreetly over time. Upper eyelid scars are hidden within folds, while lower eyelid scars are placed below the lash line for concealment. Most patients find scars become inconspicuous within months to a year post-surgery, rarely affecting long-term appearance. Dr. Moran will guide you through blepharoplasty for optimal results.
