When is Ear Surgery Performed?

Ear surgery can be done for a number of reasons. It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth and becomes apparent as an individual develops, or it can treat ears that are misshapen due to an injury.

The surgery creates a natural ear shape while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. The correction of even minor deformities in this area can have profound benefits to a patient’s appearance and self-esteem. Read on to see what ear surgery in Nashville can do to improve your image.

The Transformation

Otoplasty is designed to address virtually any cosmetic defect involving the ears. The procedure can correct:

  • Overly large ears — a rare condition called macrotia
  • Protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees — not associated with hearing loss
  • Adult dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery

The Procedure: What to Expect

Ear surgery takes between one and three hours to complete. To begin the procedure, Dr. Moran will make small incisions in front of, behind, or inside the ear.

The resulting scars will be hidden within your natural contours and difficult to detect once you’ve healed. Through those openings, she can reshape the ear; pin a protruding ear back so it’s closer to your head; remove cartilage to resize an ear that’s too large; or graft cartilage to the area.

Once a discreet, ideal ear shape has been achieved, Dr. Moran will close the incisions with stitches and place a dressing over the area.

Why Dr. Moran?

Dr. Moran is one of the most credentialed plastic surgeons in the Nashville area – not to mention the nation. With over 28 years of experience, she is the only female Double Board-Certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Tennessee and was appointed the first female president of the AAFPRS. She trained at Tufts, Boston University, and the University of Michigan, and is known for her natural aesthetic outcomes and dedication to exceptional patient care.

Are you a Candidate?

Dr. Moran can confirm your candidacy during a private consultation for otoplasty at our Franklin, TN office. The surgery can be done on both children and adults. For younger patients, the ideal candidate is at least seven years old, because that’s when ear cartilage is stable enough for correction. The child should also be healthy and without untreated chronic ear infections.

It’s important that the child is cooperative, committed to the surgery, and can communicate their feelings about the procedure. For our teen and adult patients, you can be considered a candidate if you’re in good general health and a non-smoker. You should also have specific, realistic goals in mind for the surgery, as well as a positive outlook.
