As we age, the skin of the face and neck loosen. Age, sun exposure, gravity, and genetics all contribute to skin changes. Fine lines become wrinkles, and gradually deeper folds. The jawline softens into jowls, and beneath the chin excess skin starts to sag. With the aging of the U.S. population, the facelift (Rhytidectomy) procedure has become the third most performed facial cosmetic procedure.
What To Expect When You Get A Facelift
Facelift is a surgical procedure performed to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:
- Sagging in the midface
- Deep creases below the lower eyelids
- Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
- Fat that has fallen or is displaced
- Loss of muscle tone in the lower face that may create jowls
- Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw that can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a double chin
The scars from a facelift procedure are hidden in the hair and around the ears, so even men or women with short hair can have the procedure performed.
Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation
A facelift can only be performed surgically. Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments cannot achieve the same results, but may help delay the time at which a facelift becomes appropriate and complement the results of surgery. Facelift surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.
Non-surgical rejuvenation procedures are typically performed in conjunction with a facelift are brow lift, to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. These include anti-wrinkle injectables and fillers and laser treatment options.
Am I a candidate for facelift?
A facelift is best performed on adult men and women who feel that their outward facial aging no longer reflects their personal view of themselves. Typically a facelift affords greater self-confidence and self-esteem.
*As a restorative surgery, a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance and cannot completely stop the aging process. You will continue to age naturally, but aging will progress from the more youthful version of yourself that has been restored by the facelift.
Facelift surgery is a good option for you if:
- You are physically healthy
- You do not smoke
- You have a positive outlook and specific, but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance
I have been a patient of Dr. Moran for many years. I was referred by a friend who was happy with the results of her facelift. I have never felt pressured to have treatments that I was not interested in… Recently a high school friend said I looked the best I ever have, and in all honesty, I thinks she’s right.
Where facelift surgery performed?
Facelift surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis or with an overnight stay for observation at a nearby fully accredited outpatient surgery center.
Anesthesia and Medication
A facelift does not always require general anesthesia (the patient is put to sleep). It depends in part on the amount of facial tissue to be treated and the anticipated length of surgery.
Most patients recover well enough to return to work and most normal activities, including moderate exercise, in about 2 weeks.
