What is Scar Revision?

Scar revision is meant to minimize a problematic scar so that it is more consistent with your surrounding skin tone and texture. Although scar revision can provide a more pleasing cosmetic result or improve a scar that has healed poorly, most scars cannot be completely removed.

Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic scars feature excessive collagen deposits and appear slightly raised. These scars are often treated with steroid injections and topical treatments.

Keloid Scars

Keloid scars are thick lesions or nodules that are significantly raised. They are larger than the original wound or incision and can be painful or itchy. Dr. Moran can minimize the appearance of keloid scars with laser therapy, steroid injections, and surgery.

Contracture Scars

Contracture scars are tight, mostly flat lesions that can restrict your ability to move your face freely. This type of scar is common in areas of excessive skin loss, for example after a burn. They often require a skin graft to restore natural movement.

Acne Scars

Acne scars are very common and can appear as deep pits or angular, wave-like bumps. The treatments vary depending on the type of acne scar present but most often include surface treatments like dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing

The Treatment Options

The specific treatment Dr. Moran recommends for you will depend on the type and degree of your scar. The options we have available include:

  • Simple topical treatments. Gels and other treatments can lighten existing scars and discoloration.
  • Minimally invasive procedures. There are an array of minimally-invasive treatments available for scar revision, including dermabrasion, laser therapy, chemical peels, injectables, and more.
  • Surgical revision with advanced techniques in wound closure. This approach is used for very deep scars. Dr. Moran may excise the tissue and close the wound in layers, or transfer a flap to the area.
